How Do You Clean Solar Panels?

January 31, 2025

Solar panels are a great addition to your home if you're looking for a way to save money on energy costs and contribute to a sustainable future. However, like many other items in our lives, regular maintenance is required to keep them operating effectively. This is why cleaning solar panels is so important. Let's talk about how to clean them properly.

The Basics of Cleaning Solar Panels

Cleaning solar panels is not as simple as hosing them off or using household cleaners. Letting the rain "do the cleaning for you" is unfortunately not a solution either. Rain can leave behind dirt, pollen, and mineral deposits that only impede on your solar array's performance.

To clean solar panels effectively, we use solar-safe methods that include:

  • 100% Chemical-Free:  Harsh chemicals can degrade the surface and/or leave a residue on your panels
  • Deionized Water:  Free of impurities which ensures a spotless, streak-free finish with no mineral buildup
  • Specialized Equipment:  Using non-abrasive tools designed specifically for the job prevents abrading the surface of your solar array .

Safety is a Priority

Cleaning solar panels often involves working on rooftops and other elevated surfaces, making safety a top concern. This is why it's essential to:

  • Use the appropriate safety gear such as harnesses and other fall-protection equipment
  • Avoid standing directly on the solar panels to avoid breakage or injury
  • Exercise caution when working on wet surfaces to avoid slipping

Without the proper equipment, cleaning your own solar panels can be dangerous. Sometimes it's best to leave these things to the professionals.

Solar panels are built to withstand the elements, but that doesn't mean they're immune to performance loss. One of the more common (and less understood) causes of reduced performance is due to soiling of the surface: the buildup of dirt, dust, pollen, bird droppings, salt residue, and other airborne debris on the panel surfaces. Fortunately, that problem is what Solar Clean Pros is in the business of solving.

Solar panels are designed to be a low-maintenance investment, but that doesn't mean no maintenance is needed. Many customers have performance issues that can go unnoticed for months or even years because they're not visible from the ground. A visual inspection of your system helps catch small problems early, or identify the cause of ongoing problems to protect your performance and hopefully save you from costly repairs down the road. Here's some things we look for in our multi-point inspections that come standard with every solar cleaning appointment.
